Honest comparisons / For book lovers

Apps like Character.AI, for people who love books

If what you really want is time with characters from books, Fictora is built for that: you meet people from the novels you read, tell it how far into a series you are, and they remember what you talked about. Character.AI, Talkie and Chai are bigger, broader, and better if you want to make your own characters.

What book lovers are usually looking for

Most people who search for an app like Character.AI already know the appeal: a conversation that answers back, with a personality on the other side. Readers tend to want something narrower. They have just closed a book and want more time with someone in it. They want that person to sound like the page, not like a generic friendly voice wearing a familiar name.

That shapes what matters. Breadth matters less than whether the character knows their own story. Making your own characters matters less than finding the one you already love. And spoilers matter a lot, because a reader halfway through a series does not want the ending handed to them in a reply.

The short comparison

Everything in this table comes from each app's own store listing or website, checked on October 14, 2026. Prices are US prices from each app's store listing. Apps change often, so check the listing before you decide.

"Not checked" and "not in its listing" mean exactly that: we did not find the feature on the public pages we read, which is not the same as the app lacking it.

Where Fictora falls short

Fictora is new and small. The other three apps each show tens of millions of Google Play installs. Fictora has far fewer readers, less history, and a smaller community around the app.

You cannot build your own character on Fictora, and there are no voice calls. If you love inventing original characters, or you want to talk out loud, Character.AI does both. Fictora's monthly plan also costs more than Character.AI+ ($14.99 against $9.99). And for now there is no iPhone app in the App Store; iPhone readers use the website.

Where Fictora is built for readers

Everyone you meet on Fictora comes from a book. You start from a story you know and find someone in it: the love interest, the villain, the best friend, the mentor. Think of Elizabeth Bennet arguing about first impressions, Sherlock Holmes reading you from across the room, or Count Dracula being far too polite about dinner.

Series readers get a spoiler check. The first time you meet someone from a multi-book series, Fictora asks which book you are on and saves it to your shelf, where you can move it forward as you read. Characters remember your conversations, so the second chat picks up where the first left off.

BookClub puts several characters in one conversation, from the same book or from different ones, with you in the middle. It works the way a good book club does: people disagree, tease each other, and pull you into it. You can also choose how a character treats you, sweet or a little spicier.

How to choose

  • You want the biggest range and your own creations: Character.AI, Talkie or Chai.
  • You want voice calls: Character.AI lists them.
  • You want characters from the books you read, with spoilers kept in check: try Fictora.

Plenty of readers will use more than one. Each app is free to start, so the cheapest test is a single conversation on each.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fictora free?

You can start free. A free account gets 10 messages a day, shared across one-to-one chats and BookClub. There is one paid plan, $14.99 a month or $89.99 a year, and it removes the daily limit.

Can I make my own characters on Fictora?

Not today. Fictora is built around characters from books, so you meet someone from a story rather than designing an original. If building your own characters is the main thing you want, Character.AI, Talkie and Chai all offer creation tools.

Will a character spoil a series I'm still reading?

The first time you meet someone from a multi-book series, Fictora asks which book you are on and saves your place. You can change it later from your shelf as you keep reading.

Who is Fictora for?

Adult readers. Fictora is for people 18 and over, and it suits anyone who finishes a book and wants more time with its people: the love interest, the villain, the best friend or the mentor.

Is there a Fictora app?

Fictora runs in any web browser at fictora.co and is on Google Play for Android. An App Store listing for iPhone is not live yet, so iPhone readers can use the website in Safari.
